Early snow

We had our first snow of the year this morning, and there's a chance of snow this afternoon as well. Last year our first snow was November 30th! I do like snow, but Fall is my favorite time of year and I don't want to skip it, lol. As you can see, there is still plenty of green leaves on the trees:

My plants were NOT ready for this!

It's a shame to say goodbye to my roses this early, but I'm afraid they're toast. We're supposed to have near record lows tonight in the 20's.

Everyone says it's going to be a hard winter this year in the Midwest. And I thought last year was bad! I guess we'll find out.

Stay warm!

Summer Solstice

Sunrise solstice celebration. It poured rain at 4:00 but stopped by 5:00.

Good thing I planned ahead and had covered the firewood with a tarp.

No visual sun rise due to the overcast sky, but the fire represented nicely.

I'm so in love with these colors. I must paint them! I was especially obsessed with how the ashes of this cedar were a beautiful blue-gray.

The sun is at its brightest today and nature is at her peak.

Happy Solstice, everyone! May you be blessed with light, love...

and laughter...

Me (left) and my best friend, up since 4am!

Baby Squirrels playing outside my window

We have a mama squirrel with four babies living in the tree in our front yard. They are so cute! I had to share this video I took of the babies playing and jumping for joy. Although mama's not in the video, she was watching them the whole time.

Right now they are about half the size as an adult. Cloud does not go into the front yard, so they are safe from him.

Wordless Wednesday - Barred Owlets

I know it's Wordless Wednesday, but I just had to tell you that a. These owls are living in my friends backyard, and b. I wish I had a longer lens, lol! In the last picture you can see the parent is carrying what looks to be a dead squirrel to the babies. When he saw me taking pictures (I was a good 40 yards away) he flew away.

Fantasy sketches, Spring Cleaning and new video

I wanted to try sketching on darker papers with white pencil for the highlights, just to mix things up, and I really like the effect. I find it very relaxing to sketch from my imagination, just kind of starting with a face or some shapes and seeing where it will lead me. So during the weekend I sketched this fantasy warrior and then decided he needed an animal friend, so I drew him this giant cat-like creature. I want one, lol!
I liked him so much I drew a female counterpart:

We had a spell of very nice days last week which I spent much of the time in the yard cleaning up the flower beds.  We have a lot of landscaping, and the gorgeous yard is one of the reasons we bought this place last year. I haven't found anything blooming yet, but there is a lot of new growth!

I also made another YouTube video, this one is a WIP commissioned dog portrait of a wolf hybrid from a couple years ago. If you like the video, I would love it if you take a moment to click through to its YouTube page and rate it - the higher number of stars and ratings, the higher it shows up in searches.  Thanks!

Angry BBQ is angry...

Come on, Angry BBQ. I have Spring fever too, but February in the Midwest means that it can be 60 degrees one day, and the next day we can have our biggest snowfall of the year. I know it's cold Angry BBQ, but just look around you at how beautiful it is...come with me and lets walk around the back yard...

I've never seen the patio lights look so lovely!

The sky looks so blue today.

Everything wears a cloak of white...

that could fall off at any moment.

Logs become figures lying in the snow.

Meditation Bench is meditating.

The simplest things are stunning if you stop to look at them.

Stand under the pergola and look up. Why Angry BBQ, is that a smile?????

See, Angry BBQ, it's a beautiful day.
Lets enjoy the snow. Spring will be here before we know it.

Brigid, new paint review, and sunset

First off, here is the finished ACEO of Brigid that I had started in the previous post. In case you're not familiar with the Celtic goddess Brigid, she is the goddess of hearth and flame, and brings the promise of Spring as the days grow longer. She also brings the lambing and calving season, which was of utmost importance in agrarian societies during this time of year when food was scarce and creamy milk and cheese could mean the difference between life or death. So here she is with a lamb and the sun in all it's glory. In the background I painted smoke rising from the cottage chimney, because her power was believed to be present in the hearth fire.

She's so pretty, I haven't decided yet if I can part with her, but I did a limited edition print run of 16, listed in etsy and artfire.

Now, for the review of Goldens new Open line of acrylics... I'm in love!!! Brigid was painted on illustration board, a thirsty surface to be sure, and they still performed very much like oils! Depending on how thick the paint was, it was wet for hours! It blends effortlessly, feels so silky and I can't wait to try them on gessoboard and canvas. My only complaint is that they are more transparent compared to Goldens Heavy Body paints, even the titanium white. But if that's an issue you can mix the Open with the Heavy Body. Yes, they are compatible but mixing will speed up the drying time depending on the ratio. Since I have lots of Golden Heavy Body paints, I'm glad they play well together. :-)

I don't even need to use my Stay-Wet pallet with these, just an air-tight one. The thin layers on the pallet do start to dry out, but the thicker gobs are fine so far! I'm really excited about the possibilities with this line of paint! To my artist friends, if you've been thinking about trying them, go for it! The introductory set is about 15 bucks at DickBlick and includes 6 tubes. You can also read more about them on Goldens site here.

I had to share this sunset from yesterday, they've been pretty spectacular the last few weeks. This is the view from my studio window. I love being able to sit here and watch the show. :-)
