New work in progress - hummingbird

I'm working on a very large, (relatively speaking) hummingbird painting right now. This is 18 x 24 inch, acrylic on canvas.

I'm blessed to have many hummingbirds visit my feeder every day in the summer to early fall. There's one female in particular who sometimes hovers within arms reach of me, seeming quite curious. I love them so much! I want this painting to capture the way they make me feel when I see them, their energy, and the joy they share freely to anyone who cares to stop and look.

Limited Edition hummingbird prints available

Hummingbird ACEO LE print - "Life Force"

I still can't bring myself to part with my original hummingbird ACEO. I feel like I need him around me right now, lol. But I did a very limited edition print run of only 16. They are listed in my Etsy and Artfire stores.

Have a joyful weekend everyone!

Wordless Wednesday - Barred Owlets

I know it's Wordless Wednesday, but I just had to tell you that a. These owls are living in my friends backyard, and b. I wish I had a longer lens, lol! In the last picture you can see the parent is carrying what looks to be a dead squirrel to the babies. When he saw me taking pictures (I was a good 40 yards away) he flew away.

May Day inspired art, hummingbird ACEO

This is an ACEO acrylic painting, 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch. I’m calling this piece “Life Force” because the hummingbird is a great symbol of life force to me: their migration across the Gulf of Mexico, where they must fly their tiny bodies about 20 hours and 450 miles nonstop until they reach land or die, their aerial acrobatics (I took a photo last year of one flying upside down,) their dazzling jewel-like colors, and the joy they carry and share with the world. About this time of year they are arriving in my state (Iowa) and I think this ties in with May Day perfectly, because to me it is all about celebrating the Life Force - the beginning of the growing season, new life, energy, warmth and exuberance.

I love this piece so much that I think it's going to be a study for a series of larger hummingbird/Life Force pieces.

Here are a few work-in-progress shots. I love the paint on my fingers! :-)

Have a joyful day!

Warm thoughts...

I don't even want to talk about how cold it is outside right now. If you live in the Midwest like I do, or read the news then you already know. Instead I will post some pictures I took in my garden last summer and think warm thoughts...

That's a little better. I like the shirt Adam wears on Mythbusters that says, "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" :-)

Frost is coming

house 143

The wind is blowing so hard today, we're supposed to have gusts over 50mph. We also get our first frost tonight - low of 28 (24 tomorrow night!) I picked these roses yesterday because they're the only thing left blooming and I don't know how well they'll make it through the next couple days.

I snapped this Cardinal holding on for dear life while riding out the wind on the feeder this morning.

The "Tree of Life" in our front yard lost this good sized limb. It's kind of hard to make out in the photo, but the limb is as long as the rose bed - all the way to the left edge of the photo. Hope that's the extent of the damage. I do love to hear the wind through the trees though, especially the pines. This weather makes me want to curl up with some tea and a book.

Very disturbing!

While I was taking the hummingbird photos today, I noticed a strange looking bird. After a better look, I saw this very disturbing sight. Look if you dare...

It appears to be a cardinal with a bald head! Yikes!!! I was afraid he might have some weird bird disease, but a quick search turned up this bit of information:

'For most birds, molting is a process where a few feathers are lost and replaced at a time—the bird looks a little scruffy, but it always has a covering of feathers. In some species, however, particularly Blue Jays, cardinals, and possibly grackles, a few individuals seem to lose all the feathers on their heads at once, resulting in a very odd looking bird.

When birds become bald this way, it’s temporary: new feathers soon grow and the bird looks normal once more. Some bird experts believe this is a rare (and insignificant), molting pattern seen in particular individuals year after year. Others wonder if the phenomenon is caused by a health problem.'

This bird has made me realize that if vultures had feathers on their head, they would probably be considered beautiful birds. He acted normal enough, I hope he gets his feathers back soon. He needs a name. Any suggestions? I'm thinking 'Igor' or 'Rogaine...'

Finally!!!

My obsession with photographing hummingbirds is still going strong, and I was rewarded big time today - I finally got some pictures of male hummingbirds! And not just any photos, but some fantastic ones! :-D This one was taken through the kitchen window. You can clearly see his ruby throat. I quickly set up outside for the rest of the sequence. It was an action packed hour with many different birds. Migration?

The color of the throat patch seems to vary depending on the way the light hits it. In these photos it is gold, orange and even black!

Grabbing the perch.

Nice still shot w/gold.

Love this picture!

This guy was very acrobatic!

Flying treasure!

It looks like he's falling but he's really flying upside down for a moment.

Cool photo, reminds me of an airplane coming in for a landing.

I spotted this girl in the tree. Good practice for my powers of observation!

Nice shot of a female, and her little feet.

Hello there!

Pretty girl!
Hope you all enjoy the photos. :-)
