Garden Greyhound

Garden Greyhound, 6 x 6 inch oil on panel
© 2014 Kathleen Coy

This little beauty has been juried into the famous 6"Squared show at the Randy Higbee Gallery. This is my third year in the show, and as always, it's an honor to be a part of the "greatest small works show on earth."

This is the frame I picked out:

If you're not available to attend in person, you can view the entire show online here: http://www.dailybrushwork.com/Default.aspx?GSID=51&pg=105

Bison Skull Study

Bison Skull Study, 8 x 6 inch, oil on linen

Available here

This was painted from life in my back yard. I find skulls to be incredibly beautiful, and very helpful for studying anatomy.  This skull has a very interesting patina, probably from being outside for 6 years.  I battled mosquitoes throughout the painting, but in the end it was worth it.

Jackrabbit painting

Jackrabbit, 6 x 8 inch, oil on linen
© 2014 Kathleen Coy
Available here

Jackrabbits are so interesting looking to me, as I'm used to the Eastern Cottontail rabbit here in Iowa.  I wanted this piece to have a vintage look and feel to it, and hope to paint more of these guys in the future.

My dogs are such great models, I love to follow them around the yard with my camera. This is my baby girl, Train. I love the graceful curve of her neck. She is as beautiful as a fairy tale.

Sara is a commissioned painting of a lovely white Podenco with one blue eye, a very beautiful, and enjoyable feature to paint.

Merlin

This is a bittersweet commissioned portrait of a beautiful and much loved greyhound who recently passed away. I wanted this painting to have a sense of peace about it, and I hope it brings his family comfort.

Picnic, 12 x 16 inch, oil on linen

Franzi is an adorable podenco andaluz maneto living in Austria, and has one of the most expressive faces I've ever seen on a dog. He'll be starring in a series of commissioned paintings. These are the first two.

A recent painting of Train, my female greyhound. I love the way light and reflected color dance across her form.

Cloud at Thirteen

Cloud at Thirteen, 8 x 10 inch, oil on linen
© 2014 Kathleen Coy

My rat terrier Cloud turned thirteen a couple weeks ago. He's in good health, but is slowing down. It shows in everything he does, and I wanted to capture that.. I want to remember him in every stage of his life. Here he is contentedly basking in the sun, cheerful even though his back legs are a little stiff. A bittersweet moment in time, and an emotional painting for me - my best little friend is growing old.

Below are some progression photos, and a quick sketch I did yesterday while he slept.

This was a nice break from dogs. Not only did I enjoy painting this beautiful horse, but loved the metal and leather of the bridle, as well.

This is Angela, who is sadly no longer with us, but her bright spirit and dignity live on in paint. 10% of all sighthound project painting sales during this month (April, 2014), are being donated to Beverly Farmer Podencos, who rescued Angela, and so generously allowed me to paint from her photo.
