New art - Red Cloud

This painting was an experiment in the use of bold color in a dog portrait, and I'm quite happy with it. The strong color needed a strong and unusual pose to balance it - so once again, here is my rat terrier Cloud modeling for me. This is my largest dog painting to date - 18 x 24 inches. You can see some of the texture throughout if you click the picture to enlarge it.

This is a rather unconventional dog portrait, and I'd love to hear what you think of it.

    Cloud is, as always, stunning, but I can't take my eyes off that beautiful red. The waves in it and the depth -- the best likeness I can think of is watching a fire. Always the same but every second something different.

    Thanks Lori! This is my dog Cloud. I thought it best to do an experimental painting using my dog, lol.

    Kathleen, this is superb! I love the viewpoint, and the colors, though beautiful, are almost secondary. You are grabbed immediately by the riveting composition. You GO!

    Very daring and quite marvelous! The composition alone makes for a very striking portrait, the colors add a wonderful emotional component. And the glint of reflected white in his eye draws us back to the handsome subject. Bravo!

    Incredible! I love Cloud's pose. It fits perfectly with the dramatic, bold red. You're such an amazing artist. I wish I could see the painting in person. :P

    Hi Kathleen--I really love this painting! I think it is just brilliant the way you create a sense of mystique with the position of Cloud's pupil, the vertical upstrokes in brighter red, and the funnel shape above it all (among some other very interesting elements!). The combination generates fascination that makes me not want to look away without knowing what Cloud sees.
