Sami's portrait is finished!

"Sami" 8 x 10" acrylic on Ampersand Gessoboard
© 2009 Kathleen Coy

Sami's portrait is finished, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out. I can almost feel her in the room with me. This portrait has a special place in my heart, as I painted Sami's owner's other dog Lyle two years ago. Sadly, Sami and Lyle are no longer with us, but there is a young Rat Terrier named Sprocket filling their shoes. Sami was a Rat Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog cross, and you can see both traits clearly. Here is a video of the progress:

Thank you for all the comments left as this painting progressed. It's such an honor to paint someone's beloved dog, to create with my own hands a tribute to the special bond and unending love we share with our canine friends.

  11. Kathleen!

What a lovely tribute to a lovely dog!

    This turned out great!

Such a determined, happy expression you captured.

I love how her body seems to disappear into the background. Maybe some symbolism there since she already passed?

    Beautiful job!!

  13. I love the new portrait! So much life and personality. You're backgrounds are beautiful. When I was painting I always had an issue with my backgrounds, so I always notice them. Your's add interest with out overpowering, and they give your paintings a nice depth. Very well done as always, beautiful!
