It's a pinup!

It really didn't take much to convince hubby that he should let me paint a pinup girl on the remote control boat he's building. In fact, the conversation went something like this:

Me: "You should totally let me paint a pinup on your boat."
Hubby: "Uh... SURE!"

Heehee! I wanted to paint my take on a Gil Elvgren, 50's style pinup. I'd never painted on wood before, or painted a pinup girl for that matter. I just jumped right in....
Remember the boat from Mondays post?

Since the boat is black, I drew with white pencil:

Then I realized that the colors would look muddy painted on top of the black, so I blocked it all in with gesso:

And sketched the details over that with pencil:

Next I started laying down the skin tones:

And gave her some hair - she kind of reminds me of Jessica Rabbit now:

Starting on the nightie:

And the finished painting :

And a shot of yours truly to give an idea of the boats size. I put the camera on a tripod on top of a desk to get this shot, lol.

I had so much fun painting this pinup. Painting skin is a lot easier than painting fur, maybe I should stop painting animals? Haha, just kidding - I could never stop doing that!

Next step is to hand letter the boat's name on it's sides. You'll have to wait a little bit to find out the name, lol...

  1. This was like watching a stripper in reverse. You may have found another niche! But I still prefer the dog paintings.

I adore that era of artwork too, Sarah. And I liked painting on wood so much I think I will look into painting on gessoed wood panels.

    LWD, patience grasshoppa...

    Thanks Tina. **blush**

Thanks Melody, yes it was a very nice change and challenge to do something so different. I think it's good to do things like that once in a while. And yes, the boat is as big as our coffee table! Hubby does love it. :-)

  8. Wowie!!! That is awesome. I loved seeing the progression, and was surprised at how big the boat is. Can't wait to hear the name.

Is this boat for decorative purposes only, or will it ever see the water?

  9. Thanks Five. Yes, it will see the water - hubby plans to put an engine (I think a lawn mower or something like that) inside it and make it remote controlled. The whole thing is going to be clear coated so the paint will be protected.

  28. Oh look it's YOU! Pretty girl. I think I see a resemblance to the pin up girl? he he. OH i hacve to tell you. I was in a little boutique the other day, and they had this great old drafting table. I asked them if it was for sale? (I kept walking over and looking at it)It was as if it was drawing me to it. (haha "drawing") It was for sale! I bought it! I love it it is the most inspiring table ever. I can only imagine the master pieces that were created on it? I will take a photo soon. I thought of you when I saw it. I remember loving yours when you posted about it.

Thank you for all your comforting words. It means so much. ((Hugs))

  32. Kathleen!

    Amazing job on the pinup!

Did you use acrylic or oils for this one? Just curious.

Great proportions, anatomically correct, bright colors.

Again, just a really nice job here.
